How to Choose Your Candle Scent: A Pixie Lights Guide

Standing in front of a wall of candles and not knowing where to begin is a very real problem. The good news is that choosing a scent gets easy when you start with how you want to feel, not with a list of fragrance notes. Here is how we think about it at Pixie Lights. If you want to know how to choose a candle scent, this is the short version.

Start with the mood

Ask yourself what you want the candle to do. Ground you after a long day? Lift the house on a grey morning? Clear your head and freshen the room? Our four ranges follow those moods. Sanctuary blends are soft and soothing, made for calm and balance. The Pixie Dust tins are joyful and uplifting, with the boldest candle scent throw we make. Shadow Spire sculptural candles are all about atmosphere, with a gentler scent. Wax melts give instant, long-lasting fragrance without a flame.

Take the Sanctuary Quiz

If you would like us to point the way, take the Soulful Sanctuary Quiz. It is 15 gentle questions and gives you one of three archetypes with scent recommendations to match.

An Earthbound Guardian is drawn to warm woods, herbs and natural resins. Palo Santo & Rosewood and Rosemary & Bay might feel like home. A Whimsical Dreamer leans towards floral, fruity or sweetly spiced scents, so look at Lily & Lotus, Pomegranate Noir or Cinnamon & Saffron. A Tranquil Minimalist prefers clean, fresh and airy, so try Lime Basil & Mandarin or Fire Orange & Bergamot.

Think about the room

The best candle scent for a small room is a softer Sanctuary blend or a single Pixie Dust tin. For a larger or open-plan space, go for a stronger Pixie Dust scent, add wax melts, or place more than one candle safely around the room.

Candle or wax melt?

Soy candle vs wax melt? It comes down to flame. Candles bring flame, ritual and a lovely glow. Wax melts suit anyone who wants fragrance without a flame, and at £4 each they are a low-risk way to try a scent. Each cube gives roughly 8 hours of fragrance, according to our product pages.

A few tips for the best burn

Here is how to stop candle tunnelling. On the first burn, let the wax melt right to the edges before you put the candle out. Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn and keep the candle away from draughts. Our wax is a soy-based blend, so these are vegan candles UK shoppers can buy with confidence, with no beeswax or animal-derived additives.

Questions customers ask

A softer Sanctuary blend or a single Pixie Dust tin. For larger or open-plan rooms, choose a stronger Pixie Dust scent, add wax melts, or place more than one candle safely.

Yes. The wax is a CocoSoy blend, the fragrance oils are not tested on animals, and there is no beeswax or animal-derived additives.
